Driving in Kefalonia: Car Rental Road Guide, Parking, Safety and Local Tips

Kefalonia driving guide

This is the practical island-driving guide for AutoKefalonia customers: whether you need a car, what the roads feel like, how airport pickup works, where parking gets busy, and which car type fits the trip.

Decision

Do you need a car in Kefalonia?

For most visitors, yes. Kefalonia is not a tiny resort island where everything important is within one bus route. The beaches, caves, villages and viewpoints are spread out, and the best days often depend on leaving at the right time.

A rental car is especially useful if you want to visit Myrtos, Assos, Fiskardo, Melissani, Antisamos, Petani, Mount Ainos or more than one beach during your stay. It also helps if your accommodation is in a villa area or outside the main resort centres.

  • Best for couples who want freedom beyond one beach.
  • Very useful for families carrying bags, towels, water and child seats.
  • Almost essential for villa stays and mixed island routes.
Roads

Road conditions and safety

Kefalonia driving is safe for careful drivers, but it is not flat motorway driving. Roads can be narrow, bendy and slower than the map suggests, especially on scenic routes.

Mountain bends

Routes to Myrtos, Assos, Fiskardo, Petani and Ainos include bends, elevation changes and narrow sections. Drive calmly and leave time.

Village streets

Some villages have parked cars, tight corners and local traffic. A smaller car can make these moments easier.

Night driving

Night driving is possible, but avoid your first unfamiliar mountain route late at night if you can.

Practical

Parking, fuel and timing

Parking is usually manageable, but famous beaches and busy resort areas become easier when you plan the day instead of arriving at peak time.

Myrtos, Antisamos, Petani, Makris Gialos, Fiskardo and central Argostoli are easier earlier in the day. For longer drives, start with enough fuel and do not assume every remote route has a petrol station nearby.

  • Start early for famous beaches in July and August.
  • Do not judge routes only by kilometres.
  • Fuel before long north, Paliki or Ainos drives.
Arrival

Your first drive from Kefalonia Airport

For many visitors, the first drive starts at EFL Airport. Keep that first route simple, especially if you arrive late, tired, or with children and luggage.

Meet and collect

Use your real arrival time when booking so pickup can be planned around your flight and bags.

Check the car

Confirm fuel, child seats, return time, local contact number and pickup/drop-off details.

Drive calmly

The airport area is straightforward, but resort parking and village roads may feel narrow on day one.

Plan the return

Leave extra time for fuel, luggage and airport traffic before returning the car.

Vehicle fit

Choosing the right car for Kefalonia

You do not need an off-road car for normal tourist routes, but you do need the right size and comfort level for your luggage, passengers and driving confidence.

Economy cars

Good for couples, light luggage, easy parking and most normal island routes.

Automatic cars

Better for relaxed hill starts, traffic, resort roads and drivers who do not want manual stress.

Family and luggage cars

Better for villas, children, beach gear, suitcases and longer stays.

Before booking

Licence, insurance and rental terms

Good car rental should be clear before the handover. Check licence requirements, excess, exclusions, fuel policy and what to do if there is damage or a warning light.

UK visitors can usually rent and drive in Greece with a valid UK driving licence, subject to current rules and the rental company terms. Bring the physical licence and required ID. For insurance, pay attention to excess, tyres, underside, glass, keys and damage reporting.

Families

Children, luggage and calmer days

Family driving in Kefalonia is easier when the car has enough room for people and bags, and when child seats are requested before arrival.

Child seats

Request child seats in advance with ages and dates, especially in high season.

Luggage space

Airport arrivals often need more boot space than the booking form photo suggests.

Route comfort

Plan water, shade and shorter first-day drives if children are tired after travel.

FAQ

Quick driving answers

Clear answers before renting a car in Kefalonia.

For most visitors, yes. Kefalonia is large enough that a rental car gives much more freedom for beaches, villages, caves, viewpoints and villa stays.

Yes, if you drive calmly. Expect bends, hills, village streets, parked cars and slower scenic roads rather than fast motorway-style driving.

Book automatic if you want easier hill starts, traffic and parking. Manual is fine for confident drivers, but automatic is more relaxed on Kefalonia roads.

Famous beaches are easier in the morning. Myrtos, Antisamos, Petani and Makris Gialos can be busy in high season, so timing matters.

Airport pickup is usually best if you want the car from arrival and have luggage. Hotel delivery can work better if you do not need a car immediately.

UK drivers can usually rent with a valid physical UK licence, subject to current rules and rental company terms. Bring ID and check booking conditions.

Yes, request child seats in advance with the child age and booking dates. Availability is limited in high season.

Stop safely, turn on hazard lights and contact the rental company using the number provided. Do not keep driving with warning lights, tyre issues or overheating.
